Well, folks,
Christmas, 2009 was a great fun time at Baldwin Farms again this year. We were excited by the quality of the Christmas trees grown right here in Madison County this past season. My farm family had dodged huge rain drops last summer and fall which made for a soggy Pumpkin Season ‘09. But the rain was a blessing for the Christmas Trees! After a few years of drought, it turned out to be a perfect growing season for Kentucky-grown trees with an outstanding harvest of absolute beauties.
We had about sixteen acres of trees in varying stages of readiness from which to choose. When guests arrived, we gave them a map so they would know where to look for a perfect tree. We provided good sharp bow-saws and plastic mats to keep guests dry as they sawed their trees. For those who preferred trees with root balls to plant after Christmas, we had a good selection already dug, or after a few instructions, many tagged the tree of their choice.
The "elves" at Baldwin Farms got busy early trimming the trees so every tree had the perfect tree shape and called out, "Pick me, pick me!" as guests passed by. The Fraser Fir trees we brought up from a farm in North Carolina were beautiful. These firs are always a favorite, but simply will not grow in the heat of our Kentucky Bluegrass region.
Last season we offered a selection of "Charlie Brown" trees in a couple of fields that needed to be harvested so the fields can be replanted. Many of our guests had fun looking for that "bargain" tree...one of those "love-at-first-sight" trees because it reminds you of something...one of those trees "you-just-have-to-adopt" because it looks lonely or unloved. Whatever your choice, they'll all give you the aroma and feeling of a real traditional Christmas.
In addition to our Christmas Trees, we had a good selection of evergreen garland, wreaths, mistletoe kissing balls, mailbox covers and swags. They were so fresh and smelled so good! They were the perfect finishing touch to for the holiday season.
Our regular customers count on picking up our own Baldwin Farms Salsa, as well as Amish Jams, Apple Butter, Local Honey and Kentucky Gift Baskets for holiday gifts. Food items are some of the most appreciated Christmas gift items one receives during the holidays. This year, we added Kentucky Proud Caramel Popcorn and Fudge.
As always, we invited customers to enjoy hot chocolate and candy canes after they purchased their trees and to warm up around our open fire. If you were here last year, chances are we'll have your photo in one of our albums. Feel free to take it with you, as so many of you have done in the past. We love topping everyone's head with a Santa hat or antlers and taking photos of your family with your tree or in one of our Christmassy locations around the tree shed. Last season, we added a little "barn" next to the tree shed for gift shopping or just stepping in out of the cold.
As always, we enjoyed sharing Christmas with you. There are so many memories to be made here at the farm year after year in celebration of the birth of Christ. We hope you took a quiet moment to visit our gazebo where a star and scripture hang above a manger cradling Baby Jesus. We hope the aroma and beauty of our live Christmas trees and greenery was the perfect beginning of a traditional Christmas for you and yours. May you always make joyous and lasting memories as you search for and find the perfect tree at Baldwin Farms!
We want to remind you to be patient with the Baldwin Farm road whenever you come to visit. We added a lot of gravel last fall and we have a number of passing sections, but it is still a "farm road." It's a little bumpy and crowded at times. There are several places to pull off for passing other vehicles. Please remember to follow the signs for easy parking and to begin at the shed where you see the "START HERE" sign. It helps us all know what we are doing and prevents a lot of "wandering around."
We look forward to seeing you again soon as the Summer Season begins in late June and continues until we run out of produce. But don’t forget to check the Web pages for all the other products we have now, especially our landscape trees, lumber products, handmade swings, picnic tables and squirrel feeders.
Margery
P.S. Landscape trees, evergreens and hardwoods are available October through March. Call for appointment or information. Our trees have been inspected by the University of Kentucky. They are free of dangerous insects and diseases. |

We put out signs along the road to guide visitors. Now when visitors ask for directions to Baldwin Farms, the local residents just point up the road and say “Follow the Signs.” It’s another Baldwin Farm tradition. You’re almost there when you pass the Turkey Crossing, the Owl House and the Deer Crossing.
